In
1789, on the eve of the French Revolution
Vitré had 10,850 inhabitants. The
post-revolutionary period saw a noticeable
demographic drop and under the second empire
in 1861, 8,904 inhabitants of Vitré
were counted.
There was a moderate but steady rise up
to the First World War that brought the
figure to 10,613 (in 1911). The consequences
of the war and the economic crisis meant
that at the start of the Second World War
the city had 8,506 inhabitants (1936 census).
Since this period, the rise was first contained
and then increased with Vitré counting
14,490 inhabitants in 1990. The three cantons
of Vitré (Vitré-ouest, Vitré-est
and Argentré-du-Plessis) have 42,113
