In 2007 (INSEE census), Vitré had 16,691 inhabitants. In 8 years, from 1999, the town’s population grew by 1,977 inhabitants. A third of the population is under the age of 20.
In 1789, just before the Revolution, Vitré was home to 10,850 inhabitants. The post-revolutionary period saw a slight decrease in the population, and under the Second French Empire, in 1861, Vitré had a population of 8,904.
Up until World War I, moderate but steady growth took the population to 10,613 (in 1911). The consequences of the war and the economic crisis left the town with just 8,506 inhabitants at the time of World War II (1936 census).
Following this time, the population’s initially steady growth accelerated and in 1990 the census counted 14,490 people. Vitré’s three cantons (Vitré-ouest, Vitré-est and Argentré-du-Plessis) are home to 42,113 inhabitants.
