There are many riches and treasures to be discovered in Vitré and its surrounding area: lakes and rivers, architectural sites, walking trails and gardens. Attractive sights to discover time and again with family and friends. Enjoy a gentle stroll, swimming or walking in the sun, or playing sport.

Madame de Sévigné tourist route

The country of Madame de Sévigné tourist route is an 80km marked-out route starting in Vitré, and taking in the area’s many châteaux and religious monuments along the way. It’s also worth making a detour to explore the surrounding countryside, including the Vilaine valley and the parks, gardens, rivers and lakes.

Marches de Bretagne tourist route

The Marches de Bretagne tourist route is a great way to unwind and discover the area’s rich heritage. This route, which takes you through the whole department, consists of a 70km linear route from Mont-Saint-Michel to Fougères, as well as two circular routes, one covering 115km (Fougères, Saint-Aubin-du-Cormier, Vitré) and the other covering 100km (Vitré, Châteaugiron, La Guerche-de-Bretagne).

  • The combined municipalities of the La Guerche area: Moutiers, la Guerche-de-Bretagne, Moussé.
  • The combined municipalities of the La Roche-aux-Fées area: Rannée, Arbrissel, Retiers, Marcillé-Robert, Le Theil-de-Bretagne, Essé, Boistrudan, Piré-sur-Seiche, Amanlis.
  • The combined municipalities of the Châteaugiron area: Châteaugiron.
  • The canton of Châteaugiron: Noyal-sur-Vilaine.

Walks

Some of the area’s many walking trails:

  • GR 34: Mont-Saint-Michel – Saint-Brieuc.
  • GR 37: Redon – Josselin – Carhaix.
  • GR des Marches de Bretagne: 40km walk from La Gravelle to Vitré (through 6 communes).

Old railway lines open to walkers and cyclists:

  • Moutiers/Vitré (access via the Chemin du Pavillon)
  • Fougères/Louvigné-du-Désert
  • Fougères/Antrain
  • Pleurtuit/Dinard
  • Messac/Comblessac

Walk or ride through the heart of the town along the numerous paths traversing the different neighbourhoods and linking the different corners of Vitré: the Vilaine valley, Beauvais, and La Fleuriais among others.

A guidebook for walkers: available for purchase at Vitré’s tourist information centre, the guide includes a general map showing the 50 marked-out trails, a section on each trail and lots of practical information on historical sites, guided tours and accommodation options.
